Choosing the right support and accommodation to live independently and comfortably is one of the top priorities of many NDIS Participants. One of the most common terms that you might come across on your NDIS plan are terms, SIL and SDA. Knowing the difference between these two terms is important to know what’s the best accommodation for you.
SIL stands for Supported Independent Living, while SDA stands for Specialist Disability Accommodation. Some might interchange and confuse these two terminologies as the same; they are quite different to one another.
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is one of your options that can be accessed in your NDIS plan. It provides you with support that will help you build skills to live as independently as possible. This scheme is usually accessed by participants who are living in a shared space and requires 24/7 support. However, SIL can still be accessed if you prefer living alone in your own space.
Sublime Care has multiple SIL vacancies in Cameron Park, Mayfield, Cessnock, and Aberglasslyn. We provide customised support per individuals’ required needs. We are always in the process of new SIL properties. If you do not see the location where you are looking for a SIL property, we encourage you to contact us to see if we could open a SIL property in the location of your choice.
Some of the supports that you can receive from SIL are the following:
• Assistance in managing budgets and money.
• Establishing life routines that promote positive outcomes for individuals.
• Assistance to gain greater independence with household tasks such as cleaning, meal preparation and cooking meals.
• Support with taking medications and living a healthy lifestyle, including support with medical appointments.
• Support with planning, organising and completing daily tasks.
• Participate and engage with the community through community participation activities.
• Participate and engage with the community through community participation activities.
What are the Benefits of Having SIL on Your NDIS Plan?
• Comfortable and clean environment.
• Control over your preferred daily routine.
• Support from qualified carers 24/7.
• Opportunity to interact and socialize with other participants to build social skills.
What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a specialist housing solution designed for participants with severe functional impairments or highly complex support needs. SDA funding would mostly cover the housing expense, which is above the usual housing cost due to its design suited to provide in-house complex supports.
Some of the supports provided for participants living in an SDA
• High physical support such as getting dressed, moving around, and getting out of bed
SIL and SDA exist independently and are funded separately in your NDIS Plan. While SDA is specially designed for modified housing for participants with high complex needs, SIL, on the other hand, provides daily living supports to encourage participants to live as independently as possible.
Both SIL and SDA can be both funded on your NDIS plan depending on your eligibility. This could provide you with more personalised support according to your needs.
