Neville’s Big Day Out (Neville’s Train Adventure)

at 11 pm

Neville has a deep love for traveling on public transport, especially trains. His favorite parts of the journey? The tunnels and the breathtaking views over the Hawkesbury River. Recently, Deb, his support worker, helped make his dream day trip a reality.

The adventure began at Broadmeadow Station. Although their first train was canceled due to industrial action, Neville and Deb pressed on with enthusiasm. The Broadmeadow staff were incredibly kind, assisting Neville with his wheelchair and arranging for support at Hornsby Station to ensure a seamless transfer.

As they crossed the Hawkesbury River, a light drizzle set the tone, casting a serene atmosphere over the journey. After a stretch of hot days, the cool, misty weather was a welcome change for both Neville and Deb.

At Hornsby, they debated catching a bus to Parramatta but decided it might cut things too close with the time they had. Instead, they hopped on a train heading into the city. The next stop? Town Hall, where they enjoyed lunch at a cool and tranquil café, complete with a stunning water view.

After lunch, Neville and Deb boarded a train for the city circle loop, an experience Neville adored. The loop provided sweeping views of Sydney Harbour, with its iconic bridge, bustling ferries, and majestic cruise liners.

As their day wound down, the pair made their way back to Central Station to start the journey home. Once again, the NSW rail staff were there to assist, ensuring Neville’s wheelchair was managed smoothly with the ramps.

The return trip, however, came with its own twists and turns. Due to ongoing industrial action, the plan shifted multiple times—from taking a bus between Gosford and Wyong to staying on an all-stops train to Newcastle Interchange. Despite the delays and arriving at Broadmeadow 40 minutes later than expected, Neville and Deb remained in good spirits.

The long day was filled with laughter, exploration, and the simple joy of Neville doing what he loves most—riding the rails.
