In July 2019, Jay’s life took an unexpected turn when he suffered a stroke in Maitland. Though he retains fragments of memory from that time, the following weeks were a blur. He spent three weeks in intensive care at John Hunter Hospital, navigating the most challenging period of his life without the support of immediate family—his parents had already passed away. The only people by his side were his ex-in-laws, offering what support they could.
During this time, Jay’s son, Jaxas, would soon to enter the world. Tragically, Jay missed the birth of his son, who was born just four months after his stroke.
Determined to recover, Jay was transferred to Rankin Park, where he spent 12 months undergoing intense rehabilitation. Step by step, he learned to walk and talk again, regaining his independence with unwavering perseverance.
Best of Buds
Following his rehabilitation, Jay moved into supported independent living (SIL) at Mayfield House, where he met Logan. Little did they know at the time, they were a perfect match as housemates. Over the past four years, their bond has grown into something extraordinary—they became the “Best of Buds.” Jay often states that Logan is the best relationship he has ever had, and Logan wholeheartedly feels the same. Their friendship is built on mutual respect and continuous encouragement, driving each other to new heights.
Their unwavering support for one another has led them to embark on an exciting new chapter: transitioning to an Individualised Living Option (ILO). Seeing their progress within this model has been nothing short of inspiring. Even more heartwarming, Jaxas spends 2-3 nights a week with Jay, strengthening their father-son relationship.
Adding to the positive momentum
Jay has recently regained his learner’s permit and is eager to start driving lessons. His determination to obtain his license is yet another testament to his resilience and commitment to reclaiming his independence.
Jay also has two adult sons who have ASD, and he desperately wants to reconnect with them. This is another milestone he is striving to achieve, and it remains a significant goal in his journey forward.
Jay’s journey is one of strength, perseverance, and unwavering friendship. With Logan by his side, the love of his son, and a newfound sense of possibility, the future is brighter than ever.
